Frequently Asked Questions

What is a brew ratio?
A brew ratio is the proportion of coffee grounds to water, expressed as 1:X. A 1:16 ratio means 1 gram of coffee for every 16 ml of water.
What ratio should I use for pour-over?
Most specialty baristas use 1:15 to 1:17 for pour-over. The default in BeanCraft is 1:16, which balances extraction and clarity well for medium-roast beans.
What is TDS and why does it matter?
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measures the concentration of extracted compounds in your brew. The SCA recommends 1.15–1.45% for filter coffee — outside this range, the cup will taste weak or bitter.
How is the brew time estimated?
Brew time is calculated from the method, grind size, and water volume using standard extraction curves. It is an approximation — actual times vary with grinder, water temperature, and pour technique.
Can I use this for cold brew?
Yes. Select Cold Brew in the method dropdown. The calculator adjusts to a 1:8 ratio baseline, appropriate for concentrate. You can manually increase the ratio for a ready-to-drink strength.
Is BeanCraft free to use?
BeanCraft is entirely free, with no account, no tracking, and no usage limits. All calculations run locally in your browser.
